What I’ve learned from going to live women empowement events.
I went to see Oprah live back in 2017. I know right? Oprah Winfrey! I felt my life was complete when I made it possible to save all my pennies to make it to this live event. I still can’t believe I went. It was a live Super Soul Session at a college near where I live. The speakers she had that day, I was blown away. It was most of the well known motivational speakers I admired, fitness trainers, authors and so much more!
In 2018 ,I went to see Rachel Hollis live, in California. Anyone who never heard of her, I encourage you go check her out live. She’s a best seller author of ‘Girl, wash your face’ and ‘ Girl Stop Apologizing’. Both books I’ve read but to be quite honest, it was her live event that extremely inspired me to take action on my dreams.
In 2014, I began going to live talk events by an inspiring person, who started off in radio, to prime time television, is a dear friend of mine called Liz Hernandez. She is creator of Wordaful. I’ve been to more than one event of Wordaful, mainly because I like the diversity and the honesty of the small group of women that go. Everytime I’ve gone, It feels like getting together with my girlfriends with no judgment and all the support, inspiration from each other.
There’s been other amazing smaller meet ups I been to but those are my top 3 I had to choose from.
Here’s what I’ve learned:
COMMUNITY IS IMPORTANT.
There’s something about having a group of women you can relate, learn, cry, support, share laughs , and feel inspired. Granted, we are in unusual times right now, but that dosen’t mean you can’t connect in other ways. Online is the way to go for now until we get back to a little more normality. I will say I’m not a fig fan of face time and zoom but that has helped me keep some of my sanity instead of not communicating with anyone at all.
YOU ARE WORTHY.
No matter where you are from, your upbringings, your experiences, your ethnicity, your religious backgroud, your race, you matter and are worthy. This is something I’ve repeatedly heard in these events. It all starts with your mind and what you believe to be true about yourself.
YOUR DREAMS ARE POSSIBLE.
Some of the most inspirational talks were from people that started with nothing to something. From no money to millions. From pain, heartbreak, unfortunate experiences to success stories. From changing careers in 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, to pursue something more meaningful to them. They all made me question what I’am doing with my precious life? Are we really living the life of our dreams? These questions, vulnerable stories I’ve listened to led me to do more what makes me happy.
SAY NO THANK YOU MORE .
Saying no can be difficult to do. Well, at least for me it was and still is. Most of the sucessful women I heard speak swore by saying no to more things and Heck yes! to things that matter to them will help you have less stress and focus on productive and meaningful things that mattet to you. For me, it means no, to going to every family party, friends Sunday brunch , events I’m not interested in, and other things. It’s helped with my mood too.
YOUR FRIENDS/FAMILY SHOULD INSPIRE YOU NOT DRAIN YOU.
This one was a big one for me when I began reading more self help books and attending these awesome live events. I had to reevaluate my friends. Some of them were not interested in going to self developement events like me and if they were, they never followed through to purchase a ticket. Some friends, only wanted to party and I was not about that life anymore.
STOP COMPARING.
“ Comparison is the thief of joy”-unknown
Why does she always look so flawless when she runs and I look like a cow drenched in sweat? I don’t have that many followers and likes. If only my boobs look that good in a sports bra? I could never wear a two piece bikini and look that great. I could go on and on. Yes, you’ve probably heard this more than a dozen times but it’s true, comparing ourselves to other women and perhaps men too makes us feel CRAPPY. What we should be doing is lifting each other up, supporting and cheering each other no matter where we are in life.
LOVE YOURSELF.
This is an important one for me.For me, I’ts making time for myself. I personally think loving myself means making time for the things that matter to me like going out for a run,a walk, working out for at least 30 minutes everyday, sometimes a yoga class, journaling, reading something inspiring or uplifting. It means loving me as I’am, knowing my worth and embracing my imperfections.
There you go friends. Those are my favorite ones I’ve heard at women empowerment groups and try to apply on my life as much as I can. If you need some inspiration reading.Check out my recent poetry book Beautiful Imperfect Soul.
